Gemserv's environmental approach

Although Gemserv's business activities are office-based rather than industrial, there is still significant scope for ensuring that the environmental impact of those activities are assessed and minimised. In general, the possibilities for doing so fall into the categories of energy efficiency, use of consumables and travel.

The company has an active programme to continuously reduce its consumption of paper. This includes printing only what is necessary, running a paper recycling programme with the waste carrier with a partner licensed by The Environment Agency and using suppliers that have suitable environmental programmes of their own - for example, we ensure that our suppliers of paper are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited.

Consistent with our values, our ADSL Internet connectivity is sourced from an environmentally friendly ISP that off-sets its annual carbon emissions through a tree-planting programme.

Since the company has clients based throughout Europe, air travel is a necessary feature of our business. We have taken action to mitigate the resulting environmental impact through Carbon Sequestration, an off-setting plan that involves planting trees to neutralise the impact of emissions caused by travel.

We believe that mitigating the environmental impact of our activities is everyone's responsibility and this is one of the core values embedded within our culture. We provide information, instruction and training to employees regarding the energy-efficient use of equipment and facilities and ensure that employees follow the established guidelines.

We are working towards certification under BS 8555:2003 - Environmental Management Systems through the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) "Acorn" scheme.
